RTE office building

The AFAA architecture firm from Lyon has designed a 14,000 square meter building for a new regional office for the power supplycompany Réseau Transport Electricité (RTE). The new building is located in the site of a former post office on the western edge of Zac des Girondins on the “îlot jardin”, the garden isle in the west of the city centre*. A mix of soft colors and a stepped design give the voluminous building vivacity and lightness in its greed surroundings. The ceramic facade is broken up by large, multilevel windows. The lightceramic tiles are not only arranged in a random pattern, they also liven up the facade through variation in the surface structure. The tile types with zero, one or three grooves are laid with no defined pattern and thus break up the monolithic character of the building. When choosing colors, the architects deliberately opted for a natural white, restrained, but multifaceted due to the interplay of light and shadow which occurs due to the many angles on the building.

The enamelled terracotta cladding in glossy white breaks up the construction volume.” Source: Villa’ RTE à Lyon, une vision électrique signée AFAA in chroniques-architecture.com, 16.01.2018
