The external appearance of the museum is characterised equally by the light sandstone facades of the existing buildings and the MOEDING tile facades of the new buildings. Although the latter differ in color shade, they constitute a reference to the existing buildings more than contrasting them. According to the architectural approach of James Carpenter, the new buildings are characterised by light transparency and airy openness, for which the brick slats developed as sun protection - the MOEDING BAGUETTES - provide accordingly. The ceramic solar protection walls stand at different distances before the glass wall structures, in extreme cases far enough away from them that, in combination with the projecting roof, a wonderfully shaded forecourt emerges in which the thermal lift of the warm air arising due to the shape and arrangement of the slats gives rise to a pleasant, light breeze.

Despite intensive solar radiation, the museum remains pleasantly cool. This is thanks to the intelligent facade systems, which were developed by James Carpenter Design Associates in collaboration with MOEDING. Thus, the director of the museum, James Snyder, proudly remarked "that his building has now also become an architectural forerunner of museum culture".
