Kuggen office building

For the construction of a new Kuggen office building on the campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, the aim was maximum energy efficiency. Triangular glazed ceramic fields in five different red shades specified by the Wingårdh architecture office, two green variants and a black shade form the outer skin of the building in alternation with glazed surfaces. The glazed, colorful brick elements present themselves impressively through the peculiarity of the processing as a shingle facade with rainscreen cladding, their shape variety, the individual character of the burnt clay in interplay with color glazes, the subtly composed variations of the base colors red and green and, last but not least, of the surface, which also touches the haptic senses.

A key focus of the architects was the durability of the materials and, above all, the outer skin of the building, challenged mostly by wind and rain. Therefore, a facade with rainscreen cladding made of burnt clay was chosen, a material that has proven its worth for millennia and that, in addition, is 100 per cent recyclable in an environmentally friendly manner for a wide variety of follow-up uses.
