With a large sculptural form, architects wörner traxler richter connect Regensburg’s mediaeval old town with the Danube and, with the Museum of Bavarian History, create a suitable place to relive the past. The new museum building with a total floor space of over 5,000 square metres is one of the few approved new buildings in Regensburg’s old town, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The ceramic building shell with its seemingly irregular profiling consists of seven different plate types with a combed surface structure, which Moeding produced on an individual basis at the request of the architects. Added to this are 4,300 four-edge baguettes, which underline the vertical texture of the ceramic tiles and give the facade a harmonious rhythm. From the comprehensive range of colors, the architects chose a light shade in light gray, in intensive coordination with the manufacturer. Thus the elegant natural surface varies its appearance depending on the weather; changes to a darker color upon precipitation and gently reflects the surrounding light moods.

“The structure and color design of the ceramic facade were developed uniquely for the construction project. The museum is given an outer skin that emphasises the sculptural appearance of the structure. Its subtly rhythmising, vertical texture consistently covers over the facade openings to preserve this impression. Due to the alternating use of ceramic tiles and sticks, any type of regularity is avoided. The material and chromaticity of the ceramic adopt characteristics of the ruins of the “Castra Regina”, the Roman legion camp on the upper Danube, the nucleus of the city of Regensburg.”
